Ghadeya Mila De Kehndi Sohne Yaar Nu

R.I.P.

 Kuldip Manak

The legendary Kuldip Manak passed away yesterday. His contribution to Punjabi folk music is substantial. This song tells the tale of Sohni searching along the riverbanks for her Mahiwal, asking the Ghada (clay urn) to bear her across the river to unite her with him. Sohni is portrayed holding her Ghada in this blog's title image. This song was recently reincarnated by Twin Beats as "Manak Drops The Pressure".  SaReGaMa has included in their Solid Gold remastered CD sets both Kuldip Manak and Dev Tharikewala compilations, I highly recommend both of them to lovers of Punjabi folk music.

Singer: Kuldip Manak
Lyrics: Dev Tharikewala aka Hardev Singh Dilgir
Music:  Charanjit Ahuja

O Pher Di Channa De Kande, Yaar Thol Di
She (Sohni) wanders along the river, searching for her lover,
Mahiwal Mahiwal Mukho Bol Di
saying, "Mahiwal, Mahiwal"
Ban Ke Marasa Sohni Dilli Paar (?) Nu
Sohni ties a rope to the urn (dilla)  (?)
Ghadeya Mila De Kehndi Sohne Yaar Nu
"Urn, unite me", she says, "with my beautiful lover".
Ghadeya Mila De Kehndi Sohne Yaar Nu

Yaar Da Vichchorda Mera Seena Sal Da
Separation from my lover makes my heart ache
Milleya Na Mahiwal Mainu Kal Da
I haven't seen Mahiwal since yesterday.
Seene Naal Launa Main Taan Dildaar Nu
I want to embrace my love
Ghadeya Mila De Kehndi Sohne Yaar Nu
Ghadeya Mila De Kehndi Sohne Yaar Nu

Yaar Bina Suna Hai Jahaan Lagda Hai
Without her lover, she finds this world a desolate/lonely place.
Rehnda Neer Naina'chon Hamesha Vagda
Tears are always flowing from her eyes.
Yaar De Vichchorde Dita Maar Naar Nu
Separation from her lover is killing the girl.
Ghadeya Mila De Kehndi Sohne Yaar Nu
Ghadeya Mila De Kehndi Sohne Yaar Nu

Sohni Yaar Vaste Dissaunte (?) Khat Di
For her lover, Sohni  (?) bears hardships?
Yaar Da Bullan De Vich Naa Rut Di
Humming her lover's name upon her lips.
Yaar Vichon Rab Disse Mutiyaar Nu
In her lover, the young woman sees God.
Ghadeya Mila De Kehndi Sohne Yaar Nu
Ghadeya Mila De Kehndi Sohne Yaar Nu

Chaati Hai Jo (?) Ghada Sohni Jaave Tarr Di
Sohni swims with the urn
Mukhon Mahiwal Mahiwal Karr Di
She calls out, "Mahiwal, Mahiwal"
Haaqa Naale Maardi Mulazedaar Nu
As she yells at her servant (?)
Ghadeya Mila De Kehndi Sohne Yaar Nu
Ghadeya Mila De Kehndi Sohne Yaar Nu

Murr Ke Tharik Piche Pair Pauna Na
Tharike (the poet's name), don't retrace your steps (don't look back).
Ishqe Nu Daag Aaj Sohni Launa Na
Sohni, don't besmirch Love's name
Aashiq Na Jaan De Ne Jit-Haar Nu
Lover's don't know anything about winning or losing.
Ghadeya Mila De Kehndi Sohne Yaar Nu
