100 Bollywood Soundtracks Every Music Lover Ought to Hear

I interrupt the desolation of this blog to bring you exciting news: my favorite blog, Music From The Third Floor has published a book! 100 Bollywood Soundtracks Every Music Lover Ought to Hear. This is not an ordinary, run of the mill, "usual suspects" listing of must-hear soundtracks. This is an eclectic collection of albums with a broad scope that serves as a definitive guidebook into the vastness that is Bollywood. For those just beginning to collect soundtracks from India, I highly recommend this book. I am sure even veteran collectors will be surprised by this decade by decade journey into Bollywood; they will surely be surprised by some of the inspirations for some of their favorite songs. From Bollywood Funk to Disco to the classics, there is something for everyone. Buy it here.  Check out more goodness on MFT3F's Twitter and Facebook feeds. Check out the trailer below.

If I have one lament over this book, it is that such a gorgeous publication should be available in gigantic coffee table, vinyl-sized, hardback goodness! I first stumbled upon PC Hille's love of Bollywood vinyl on a previous blog where he had an entry about the soundtrack Teesri Manzil which translates to "third floor". This was obviously the inspiration for the title of his subsequent blog, Music From The Third Floor, which I have followed since it's inception in 2006. Being of Indian descent and having always focused on the lyrics, I have enjoyed reading a fresh perspective on the music I grew up with. PC's observations have led me to appreciate the music with "new ears".  His book is complete with vinyl catalog numbers, music directors, artists, and track listings.  I know I will soon be making a massive playlist based on this book.

Hello, Darling, Darling
Kya Baat Hai?
What is wrong?
Tum Ab Tak Nahin Aaye
You have not yet arrived.
Come Soon, Dekho Dekho
Dekho Kitna Accha Mausam Hai
Look at how lovely the weather is.
Jaldi Aao Na,
Come soon
Please Shukoo, Shukoo Please, My Love, My Darling, My Pet
O Shukoo Please Come Soon, Please
Beautiful, O Shukoo Come Soon Shukoo... Lovely

Aaj Ki Raat
Tonight
Koi Aane Ko Hai Re Baba Re Baba Re Baba Intezaar
Someone is about to come, wait
Aur Thoda Sa Intezaar
Wait just a little longer
Aaj Ki Raat Koi Aane Ko Hai Re Baba
Usse Aane Tau De
Let him come.
Ho Dil-e-Beqaraar
O restless heart
Phir Kar Le Na Jee Bhar Ke Pyar
Then you can love him to your heart's content.
Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo
Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo

Aaj Ki Raat
Koi Aane Ko Hai Re Baba Re Baba Re Baba Intezaar
Aur Thoda Intezaar
Aaj Ki Raat Koi Aane Ko Hai Re Baba
Usse Aane Tau De
Ho Dil-e-Beqaraar
Phir Kar Le Na Jee Bhar Ke Pyar
Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo

Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo

Na Na Na Na Na Na
Na na na, Na na na, Na na na

Tu Tau Na Aaya, Aaya Koi Aur Saajan
You have not come, someone else has come, beloved
Mujhe Aa Kar Bacha Le
Come save me
Tu, Tu Hi Tu Bacha Le
You, only you save me.
Loote Hai Mujh Ko Meri Jawaani Ka Dushman
An enemy of my youth robs me
Koi Kab Tak Sambhale
For how long can one resist
Tu Tu Tu Bacha Le
Bacha Le
Aaisa Na Ho Lut Jaaye Re Tera Pyar
Let it not be that you are robbed of your love

Aaj Ki Raat
Koi Aane Ko Hai Re Baba Re Baba Re Baba Intezaar
Aur Thoda Intezaar
Aaj Ki Raat Koi Aane Ko Hai Re Baba
Usse Aane Tau De
Ho Dil-e-Beqaraar
Phir Kar Le Na Jee Bhar Ke Pyar
Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo
Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo
Aaja, Ab Tau Aaja Na, Aaja

Aaj Ki Raat
Koi Aane Ko Hai Re Baba Re Baba Re Baba Intezaar
Aur Thoda Intezaar
Aaj Ki Raat Koi Aane Ko Hai Re Baba
Usse Aane Tau De
Ho Dil-e-Beqaraar
Phir Kar Le Na Jee Bhar Ke Pyar
Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo
Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo Shukoo

"Baba" can mean father or grandfather, it's used in this song as "Daddy-O" would be used in a 60's hipster song... "Shukoo", I am guessing is the name of the person she is waiting for.

Jee Ve Sohneya Jee Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee

This is probably my favorite track by Bibi Swarn Noora, someone I discovered while searching for someone else. You can hear a bit of it here and here.

Album: Gudti Punjab Di Vol 1, Noora: A Golden Voice
Singer: Bibi Swarn Noora
Lyrics: Khawaja Ghulam Fareed

Kadeek Saada Yaar Hunda Sa, Haye
Once he was my lover
Aaj Kol Phire Chup Keeta
Today, he passes nearby, silent.
Je Yaara Tussan Bol Na Chadheya, Haye
If my love, you have fallen quiet
Assi Sabar Dil-e Nu Keeta
I have tried to make my heart patient.
Kasam Khuda Di Tu Mainu Pyara Lagna Ve, Haye
I swear by God, you are dear to me
Thay Tu Na Kar Jhor Thagane
Please don't oppress and deceive me.
Nange Pinde Mere Maare Chamkaan
You strike my naked body with a switch
Mere Rounde Ne Nain Nimaane
My miserable eyes shed tears
Jiniyan Tan Mere Thay Lagiyan Ve
As many wounds you have inflicted upon me
Tere Ek Lage Thay Tu Jaane
If you had only felt one of them, you would know (how it felt).
Ghulam Fareed, Dil Uthe Deiye, Haye
Ghulam Fareed says we should only give our heart
Jithe Agla Vi Qadar Pehchane
to one who recognizes it's worth.

Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee Oh
Live, my love, live; even if you've become someone else's, live (your life).
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee
Ki Hoya Je Aaj Nahin Saada, Haye
Ki Hoya Je Aaj Nahin Saada, Kade Tha Hunda Si
So what if today you are not mine, you were once.
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee Oh
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee

Sadke Unna Raahvan De Tu Nang Je Jinni Raahin
Sadke Unna Raahvan De Tu Nang Je Jinni Raahin
I worship the roads on which you travel.
Hasda Khedada Vekhan Tainu, Rehndi Duniya Taahin
Watching you laugh and play, keeps my world going.
Hasda Khedada Vekhan Tainu, Rehndi Duniya Taahin
Teri Khushi Naal Khushi Hai Meri, Hor Kisse Naal Ki
My happiness lies in you being happy, who cares about anyone else.
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee

Teri Khushi Lei Tere Utton Vaar Deyan Jagh Saara
Teri Khushi Lei Tere Utton Vaar Deyan Jagh Saara
For your happiness, I would give up the whole world to you.
Baal Binga Na Hove Tera, Supne Vich Vi Yaara
Baal Binga Na Hove Tera, Supne Vich Vi Yaara
May even a hair of yours not be out of place, not even in a dream.
Tere Ditte Gham Main Janvan Sharbat Wangu Pee
the sorrows that you have given me, I drink like Sherbet.
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee Oh
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee

Khein Ghamaan Da Baneya Na Koi Jamun
They say that nothing can be born of sorrows.
Ek Yaar Dardi Oh Vi Nas Gaya
There was one, my love who shared my pain, he too ran away.
Keeti Bandagi, Na Yeh Qubool Meri
My prayers went unanswered.
Sajda Kardeyan Hi Matha Khas Gaya
From bowing, my forehead has been bruised.
Aida Vekheya Beparwah Sohna
And I saw my indifferent lover
Sanu Roundeyan Vekh Ke Hans Gaya
who upon seeing me cry, mocked me.
Ghulam Fareeda, Paaye Hazaar Tarle, Haye
Ghulam Fareed says even after beseeching him a thousand times
Jaani Ek Na Dillan Di Das Gaya
my love did not once speak of his heart.
Kasam Khuda Di Teri Aayi, Sajna Main Mar Janvan
Kasam Khuda Di Teri Aayi, Sajna Main Mar Janvan
I swear by God if your time was up, I would die instead.
Uthdi Baindi, Har Vele Main Mangdi Ranvan Duavan
Uthdi Baindi, Har Vele Main Mangdi Ranvan Duavan
Standing, sitting, at all times I pray for you.
Tainu Tathi Hava Na Lage Vairi Duniya Di
May you never feel the hot wind of this hostile world.
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee Oh
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee

Ankhiyan De Vich Vasda Reh Ve,  Bol Bhavein Na Bol
Ankhiyan De Vich Vasda Reh Ve,  Bol Bhavein Na Bol
Live on in my eyes, even if you do not speak to me.
Main Teri, Tu Mera Sajna, Kavan Vaja Ke Dhol
Main Teri, Tu Mera Sajna, Kavan Vaja Ke Dhol
I'm yours, you are mine Love, I cry beating the drum.
Ishq Husn Di Marr Ke Nirdhan, Qayam Rakhenge Leek
We will keep the bond of love and beauty strong even after dying.
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee Oh
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee
Ki Hoya Je Aaj Nahin Saada, Kade Tha Hunda Si
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee Oh
Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee
Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee
Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee
Bhavein Kisse Da Ho Ke Jee
